Whats your Preferred Anti Virus

I felt like my level of intelligence dropped having installed an anti-virus that suddenly allows pop-ups on my screen, scans more files than what I know are on my computer, makes fake "system errors" and then "fixes" them (only to be rescanned, with a different amount of errors), and last but not least....reported multiple trusted system programs (svchost.exe and ctfmon.exe both of which I have long known to be harmless) as infected files. I know my computer inside and out. AV companies and the profiteering-gluttons that run them can go suck a dick. Crypters have long since proven AV's worthless. I've intentionally infected myself countless times, none of which were reported by my AV at the time. I have no faith in them.

The antivirus companies are all liars! it's proven that the antivirus companies are the ones who create viruses, so that they can sell there products!
The best antivirus is you brain! Disconnecting from the net won't get you infected,
or using another operating system can help.

...and once again, we are talking about VIRUSES which hardly even exist anymore. it is simply that lame malware garbage and almost every one i have seen so far runs off idiots not turning off active scripting!
  • Nothing on my PC. Using IP-Tables on the PC hooked to router. Firewall... and some deep-freeze action if I want to do something risky.

EDIT: Anyone know if such a thing as a deep-freeze for a network? How would something like that even work..[just a random idea..]

If you have a Windows Server OS you could push it out through active directory, but you would have to set up all of your hosts to use the active directory server.

    F-Prot for Linux - Free
ClamWin - Clam Antivirus - Windows / Linux - Free
MicrosoftSE - Security Essentials - Free

Other than those I have very little by way of anti-virus protection because since making the switch to a true operating system along the lines of OpenBSD or Gnu/Linux with a low level stateful packet inspection firewall, their is little by way of viral problems, I have spent the majority of my time cleaning Windows (TM) Machines, I have yet to clean a *nix based one.

If I get bored I can always contemplate loading Dionaea or NepenthesFE and watch whilst it reaps malware and other delights into a sanitized environment like ClamFS (clam antivirus filesystem).

  • As I'm using Windows I've been very happy with BitDefender. I bought and tried Kaspersky and couldn't stand it, and it lagged my system, oddly.

I'm readying my pc for Ubunutu and then I'll buy Comodo firewall and not use anti-virus.

  • one that i always see advertised on TV these days i have not used is VIPER. but once again, how many actual "viruses" are even written these days? (most being just garbage malware and worms)
  • Been using AVAST free version for years.  Never had an issue until recently.  It started detecting all these false positives when synching my dropbox account with my new laptop that I installed dropbox on.  Has anyone else encountered something similar?  I know it's not a virus/malware on my dropbox files because sync the same account on 2 other machines with Avast and they don't go haywire.
