White, Grey and Black Hats, What side are YOU on?

White Hats

White Hats are the white knights of the computer security world. These consist of the ethical Hackers and Computer Security experts. Their job is to fix all the vulnerabilities in sites today and find and fix them before any other hackers! These people can be Pentesters, to security admins. The name is derived from the old cowboy films where the good guys wore White Hats.

Grey Hats
These are Hackers that hack illegally into a website, but once they are in, they will not maliciously damage the website or harm it, instead they may attempt to patch it or post a message to the admin alerting them of the vulnerability. These guys hack for fun rather than money as they prefer to stay anonymous when carrying out their illegal hacks.

Black Hat
These are the bad guys of the Hacking world, writing and spreading viruses, illegally hacking into networks, servers, websites and computers and causing maliocious damage such as stealing, deleting and messing with software on the system and defacing the site! These guys can control botnets used to take down sites. The name is derived from the old hacking films where the bad guys wore black hats. A large proportion of todays hacking community would class themselves blackhats. These guys hack for fun and are the White hats worst enemy! Luckily a lot of these supposed Black hats are just Script kiddies given a rat a crypter, or a exploit and scanning and scanning until they find a vulnerable site!
