The new version of Ubuntu uses Unity, which was intentionally for just laptop/notebook computers...but they just pushed it on to 11.04.
It's okay, but I don't like how Unity uses a "dock"-like feature. You can put whatever you want on the dock (mostly), but I don't know if you can change the position...anyways, I don't like how some things HAVE to to be on the "dock", you cannot remove certain shortcuts. I don't like Unity, but I like the rest of it. I'm using slow internet right now, so I'm about to put Puppy 5.2.5 on my laptop. I'll get a screen shot up when it's ready! :3

I hate the new ubuntu. I'm still using 10.10 or 10.04. That sidebar has pretty much destroyed ubuntu for me :(

Try an old backtrack, I've got bt4 running on a Pentium 3 / 300mb RAM (or around there) laptop.

Good thing about early backtrack is that its stripped back to hell apart from the obvious tools.

Sys req's for the distro are:

    System Requirements

The minimum memory requirement for this release is 128 MB of memory and recommended 1 GB+ [since you may choose to install a lot of other applications requiring larger memory chunks. So just to be on the safer side as we can't predict what you will be installing]. Note that you must have more than 600 MB of memory for using the cp2ram feature. You will need either an i686 [32Bit] or a x86_64 [64Bit] Processor.

I'm running core2duo 2.2ghz, 4gb ram, 256mb gfx card (don't go there) and I've got a ralink mini-pci network card which works well with linux. Also when they say cp2ram it's a copy to ram feature they have on the live disk.

I tried to get Crunchbang working...but my laptop is shit. :(
  • Since i made the switch i love my linux distro, i got a very simple xubuntu and basicly customised it to my own needs, hardly noticable now. Also because i love the arch linux logo etc i use that for my desktop back ground.

I plan to move to the real arch when im nore used to linux.
