Of somone using just your IP adress to hack you, actually going into your files and modifying them directly over the inernet without an RAT etc

Its very possible using a range of methods, if you have all your ports blocked by a firewall then you should be secure to most attacks but not all. If they manage to get into your network from a local attack it is even easier for people to hack you. But remotly mostly you should be secure.

I'm pretty sure that's on LAN only. Non-LAN all they can do is DoS you pretty much.

Run a Unix type box like Linux. Much more secure.

Just use a decent firewall if you're using Windows. As long as inactive ports are filtered or closed you should be safe[ish] from the average computer user.

Using Linux as chronic suggested reduces areas you need to cover when protecting your system from outside attacks. If on the same network then people can quite easily gain access to your system if they have physical access to your system or using a few various attacks but using only your IP address it only identifies your system on the network from there they can gather intel on your system i.e. open ports, running services, hardware possibly etc.. from there they may be able to mount an attack if your system is vulnerable.

With using the proper connection, injection, and exploit methods. Any box (both *nix, and commercial), is hackable within just minutes. Still to this day there is a way to get past any firewall... Without the use of a rootkits, virus's, trojans, or worms. Though using a good worm hole to hack something is always best... Keeps tracing at bay... Oh and this doesn't matter if your connected via ppp, dhcp, ethernet, WEP, tolken, star, cloud, IDS, IPS (though I am sure at least some highly sophisticated IPS's would protect against this), firewalls, or well just about anything...

As Semtex has pointed out, using only the ip... No someone isn't going to be able to get to your computer, unless your connected straight into your modem... S/He would have to at least poke around long enough to find your mac, prior to hacking you... Though just the same, getting in prior to knowing which com is which, in a lot of ways is much better... Once your in, your in period; then things get even easier...

But mind you talbus; not a lot of people have the necessary skills and knowledge for this..
