BIOS throw the pc away "If it's embedded like IBM it can't" ?!
  • I recently have had the biggest face-palm moment of my life. Please spare me the comments ' that was stupid' etc.

Here is my problem and question . The history behind it is at the end, to make reading easier.

Problem: BIOS password no longer works after deleting system fies.

Question: Is it true that replacing the BIOS chip or mother board will do nothing if the BIOS is"embedded like IMB one's". That is what the IT store owner told me.

I took my laptop to the shop and explained what happened he said "in that case you probably have to throw it away"
I said: Isn't there anything that can be done?
To which he replied that he can try to replace some chip but that it might not work "if the BIOS is embedded like IBM ones" and if it is I can throw it away.

History:I was readying my laptop for a Linux distro and was permanently decrypting my hard drive. It was taking long so I decided to delete everything I could while I waited including system files. To maybe speed it up as I figured I had already backed up my personal files and what would it matter I'd be installing a new OS and using DBAN. In doing so I removed what I think was the 'file'? that keeps the BIOS password as it no longer works. I also ended up deleting the TrueCrypt keyfile but have a backup of it on the pc I'm using to write this and luckily made a rescue disk.

  • First; Binary Input Output System, BIOS, is embedded on every board period; hence why you have to "flash" your BIOS to update it. The BIOS is what controls every aspect of the motherboard; and is often sub-pieced in your north/south chips.
A BIOS password is rarely ever stored on a hard drive; it's usually stored in your BIOS it's self.
What you should do; unplug/unbattery it, tear it apart, take out the BIOS/CMOS battery, wait 5 minutes, replace, put back together, and go. Some boards older boards have a jumper specifically for clearing the pass...
If that doesn't work, there are plenty of tools you can use to crack the BIOS password. Though I have to question; if you were decrypting your drive, and deleting things you shouldn't have; are you sure your not talking about a boot loader password? First thing that runs through my mind; is it trying to decrypt your not completely decrypted drive?

  • Thanks burn1337! The decryption did get to finish though. And then I inserted DBAN and restarted when BIOS came up and my password didn't work.

  • hhmm... That does seem a little fishy; did it work taking out the cmos battery?

Hi hope the new year has been good to you.

So last year I took it to a shop, I didn't want to risk doing something wrong. They took out the battery and reinstalled windows. But the graphics card wouldn't be picked up, the drivers (an LG laptop) couldn't be installed. And the windows rating didn't work it gave a very low rating. They even tried re-installing and it still didn't work. Do you know what might have caused it?

    Running Ubuntu now.

  • Hmm..what version of Windows did they use?  Were they using an OEM version? You might want to check out the IBM forms or support venues for more info.  I've found that IBM's support site is quite helpful in some instances.  In any case, sounds like you've moved on to a better OS anyways.
