So i had some spare time today so i thought i would make a ubuntu trainer, very simple but works. Any way the idea is new ubuntu users would use it to learn the basic commands etc. So i just need some help coming up basic tasks for them to do.

They are all terminal based. You can find it here on my site - http://sourcex.info/ubuntu

    So far i have

    Find Current user
    Run a perl script

    All suggestions are welcome

kinda cool idea, but i think you should perhaps include resources to complete the task at hand, else it's not much of a learning experience (if they have to learn elsewhere) - seems more like a challenge setup currently, which is a bit weak because there are multiple ways to do things, and this is an emulated environment that doesn't provide all those ways.

oh, and you should probably host the background image yourself, or use a reliable image host, because the host used at the moment won't load (at least for me).

This rocks! I'm telling you now with some improvements it'd be amazing. Love the coding, i'll have to rob the source at some point i'm really interested to see how you've done it.
I agree with sangf, at the moment you're asking the person to do a task which they'd have to research to do. If you are wanting to instruct then you need to instruct the user to type whoami or give a box to answer purely on whats available onscreen. Just something to ponder :).

Isn't 'deviceguru' (top right in that version of ubuntu) the users account that's been added to sudoers file and then sudo su'd. Semantic's possibly but a die-hard linux fan would pull you up on the wording of the question ("the current terminal is operating under which users priviledges?" might be better).
yer i know about the background image, the only reason i didnt host myself was because i was rushing. And yer the background image will be edited so it matches the terminal.

Glad you like it, im planning to make it all so users can fully explore most of the OS. And if i can i will make documentation.

The PHP is really simple and the rest is just html/css

This is actually really cool! I can't find any faults other than what people have already mentioned regarding the lack of resources to help newbies through the challenges. Perhaps you could implement them in the form of man-pages or something ;)

Thats nice! you should ajax it up so the page doesnt have to change/refresh to move to the next challenge.

Also perhaps you should just make it linux/unix rather than ubuntu, as ive only looked and 1 and 2 and neither are ubuntu specific there standard commands :)
