So i had a thought, what type of hacking would be required to say hack traffic lights etc. I dont plan to do this as i am no way near good enough but it got me thinking what type of hacking is this and how to things like that work? Are they servers what you must hack, are they remote Computers that must have a vuln, are they networks that you must get inside and intercept traffic??
It's not important it was just something i was interested in, if anyone knows what type this is then please let me know.
I know some guys had a War Driving hack where they were able to connect to the servers of the traffic lights and get green lights all the way through the city, however this was before they encrypted them.
Don't they have computers that control the traffic lights right next to the intersection? There's almost always a huge metal box on one of the corners. I've seen someone open one before and I saw a desktop in it.
Could be a combination of lock-picking and physical security.
could be a combination of web-application,system and network security as they are being controlled in a control room kind of thing, and some times they have enabled some web interfaces/other services to get remote support.....
So i agree with "Sh3llc0d3",it is the combination of all the 3.
I believe it would totally depends on where you are living, starting there, the first thing I would do is to check if the traffic lights are controlled by RF (radio frequencies)or if it's using RF at all.
The easiest way to do this is checking if the police cars or ambulances turn on the green light when they need to get across, if that's the case, the next move would be to check the frequency they use.
If that's not the case, and they are just crossing it in red, then you can expect a per-programmed system with timers. This could be networking or not.
In case this is not networking, I guess there's nothing else to do than opening the street light itself (should have a box somewhere) and hacking / modifying it.
In case this is networking, then you should think about who and what for would control it. I would firstly think about the government, or any governmental agency related to traffic control. Those agencies must or could have websites, password, personal working in and wireless connections.
There's where you should proceed with:
1) Exploit Packs... 2) Remote Administration Tools, also known as RATS. 3) Remote Exploitation frameworks against their servers such as: Core Impact, Immunity Canvas, or Metasploit Framework. 4) Wireless cracking tools such as the aircrack-ng suit, netstumbler, cain&abel, or kismac, depending on your OS and other factors. 5) ARP poisoning attacks, that can be performed once inside the network with tools like firesheep for firefox, Cain&abel for win, and so many others.
As well you would need a powerfull wireless card with packet injection features such as Alfa awus036nh or the Riverbed airpcap.
i agree with makesome coffee, because in some country they only have metal boxes and in those boxes, there is a circuit plate which have a microcontroller in it to hack those metal boxes we need a program burner for appropriate microcontroller and also need a written program for that microcontroller.. and all with them we can hack the traffic light.. While some country they used the technique which shellcode specify above..
