I couldn't tell I've never taken it. I personally prefer reading from books and such to learn.

Well you can print it. Or do what I do when reading E-Books. Disconnect internet, close everything and focus on only the book.

Nothing to teach you. Download it and see for yourself. A little one better is ECSA/LPT. (talking from personal experience)

WHAT! LPT (licensed pen-tester?) thats one of the EC-Council's qualifications... as in the same people who do the CEH course!! Last time I checked you had to have passed the CEH to be able to take the LPT exam.

I'll repeat myself. NO BOOK can replace a course of the CEH's magnitude! Reading several books will still not give you the same level. The CEH exam is one of the foremost exams in INFOSEC professional careers. You will not walk into a pen-tester's job without a qualification at that level or a degree, unless your connected. The CEH exam has been criticised in other countries for being lax in it's policies about the training centres (ie training providers using Win2k machines to teach you the course on etc, basically sub-standard). At the end of the day if you are serious about becoming a INFOSEC professional then without a doubt you, at some point will have to shell out time, and money for a decent qualification.

    Standard cert's:

    - GPEN
    - CISSP
    - CEH

The CEH exam is endorsed by the DOD (dept of defense [USA]) and thus is respected by employers in the relevant fields. Anything by the SANS institute or EC-Council is respected as a general rule, however sans is very VERY expensive.... not saying the 1.5k for the CEH isn't but you get my point.

Your investing in your future and your job opportunities. I know someone whos doing the CEH while preparing to do the course I will be doing too, and you know which course i'm on about Xin. If you have the will to go into the field like I think you do then save for the CEH mate cos it'll pay off for you in the long run when applying for jobs.

My plan is to continue on to get my degree and go for the OSCP cert, then when I qualify go for CEH.
  • wouldn't you also recommend some type of CISCO certs as well? you always have to be one step above your competition, i feel. so many people are in line with degrees, resumes, and high praise that are fresh out of tech school. i feel that you can improve your odds with some proof that you can set up AND disect a large network infrustructure, hence the CISCO backing (basically saying that you can break a network AND piece it back together)

Over here [UK], alot of Uni's are CISCO academies as well... I would definitely agree that qualifications such as the CISCO and Comptia cert's are worth a fair amount, especially if you are not a graduate. Boosts your CV, and in this area of work (Computing) you need all you can.

I asked a lecturer at uni what he thought about the Cisco certs and he said most of what you will cover in the more basic Cisco Certs you will have already covered in the first year of Computer Science so it seems pretty basic

Not all of us are doing Comp Science :P Not being funny I don't think I could take 4 years of Comp Sci. As a side question did you need level 3 maths to go into your course Xin?
