Hello,

Favicons are little icons that show up to the left of the adderss bar and in favourites menu's. They just make the site look a bit more professional and customised.

Some programs don't support the .ico format, and none of my programs did, so I searched online and found this:

http://www.convertico.com/

You upload the file you want to convert in a .PNG format and it will then be converted to .ICO meaning icon. You can also convert .ico to .png.

I also found this site very helpful as it explained quite clearly how to add a favicon to your website or forum:
